Inclement Weather Information

The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. When determining whether to close schools due to extreme weather conditions, we carefully consider several critical factors. Below, you will find the criteria we use to make these decisions. While we strive to adhere to these guidelines, there may be situations that fall outside these parameters. In such cases, our administration will make every effort to provide timely cancellation information to families.

Unexpected Early Dismissal

School Cancellations

School may be canceled if:

The late news forecast (10pm) for 6am the next day predicts a wind chill BELOW -25 degrees.
An actual air temperature of negative double digits. Air temperature colder than -10 degrees.

Additional Considerations

Is there blowing snow with winds greater than 20 miles per hour?
Is there or will there be a heavy accumulation of snow, especially during the typical travel times to and from school?
Are streets and sidewalks clear?
Are buses unable to run due to extreme cold or unplowed streets?
Are driving conditions hazardous?
Are there power or phone outages?

Communication

D34 will communicate with families through its PowerAlert system using any or all of the following formats: phone call, text or email. (Please make sure your contact information is current in PowerSchool as the system will utilize the information in the PowerSchool database. If assistance is needed, contact your child’s school.)

Communication Timeline

As for the more traditional “Snow day,” the district intends to make a decision by 5 AM If schools are closed, all after-school activities in the district, including sports and evening events, will also be canceled; unless otherwise communicated.
On days when school has already begun, and conditions appear to be worsening; the district will decide by 1 PM whether after-school activities will be cancelled for that afternoon.

Weather-Related Absences

If school is not canceled and a parent and/or guardian feel his/her child is safer at home, they reserve the right to keep them home. Keeping a child home due to weather will be recorded as an excused absence on the student’s record so long as the parent and/or guardian reports the absence in a timely manner and indicates that “weather” is the reason for the absence.

In the case of an emergency closing, Antioch CCSD 34 will notify families via email, text and phone. Please ensure that your phone number and email address are up-to-date with your child’s school. Make sure your spam folder isn’t blocking emails from D34. Do not unsubscribe from school email.
